The FIVB SWATCH World Tour Women’s Beijing Grand Slam continues on Thursday with defending champions Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh hoping for a better day.
The two Americans suffered an opening game defeat before winning their second match in the first stage of the pool group in Beijing.
May-Treanor and Walsh crashed to a 15-21 21-17 16-14 defeat at the hands of sisters Erika and Emilia Nystrom from Finland before bouncing back to beat the Australian duo of Natalie Cook and Tamsin Hinchley.
Beijing Olympic bronze medallists and top seeds Xue Chen and Zhang Xi of China, second seeds Talita Da Rocha Antunes/Maria Antonelli and third seeds Larissa Franca/Juliana Felisberta Da Silva, both from Brazil, all collected a pair of wins in their respective groups.
There are 32 teams now playing a single round robin in eight groups with the top three finishers from each group advancing to the 24-team knockout stage.
The women’s round robin will finish on Thursday with the third and last round matches.
The $600,000 Beijing Grand Slam is the fourth event on the 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Tour for both men and women.
