The Champions League T20 is a premier, international, club-based T20 cricket tournament owned jointly by the cricket boards of India, Australia and South Africa, the rest of the teams are on an invite-only basis.

The first edition of the Champions League T20 (or CLT20 as it is also called) was to be played in 2008 but due to unrest in Mumbai, the tournament was postponed until 2009 where there were a total of 12 sides that took part. Three of them were from India and there were two from Australia, England and South Africa, with the rest from West Indies, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. New South Wales Blues won the first edition of the tournament.

In 2010, the number of teams was reduced to 10 but the number of games remained the same. This was because the tournament dates clashed with the English county season and the English board refused to send their sides across. The tournament was held in South Africa and the Chennai Super Kings went on to beat the home side, Warriors in the final.

In its 2011 edition, the format was kept the same as the previous season – 10 teams divided into two groups of five sides each. However, only seven of these 10 sides were given a direct entry while the remaining three teams were decided on the basis of a playoff between six sides before the start of the tournament. England were again invited in this edition of the tournament, two of their clubs played in the playoffs but only Somerset qualified for the main draw.

Mumbai Indians went on to win the tournament by beating the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final of the CLT20 2011. Pakistan, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe have not yet taken part in the Champions League T20, although Sialkot Stallions had been called up in 2008 before the tournament got cancelled.
