IPL matches are now being streamed live online.

The Indian Premier League is arguably the richest cricket tournament in the world, that started in 2008. It is loosely modelled on the English Premier League but it has some features that are unique to itself – like the player auction and the team auction.

The IPL was started under the auspices of the Indian cricket board, the BCCI. Its first edition was held in India in 2008 before the security situation in the country shifted the tournament to South Africa in 2009. It returned to India in 2010 and 2011.

In the first three editions of the IPL, there were eight teams that participated from across the country. It has a city-based franchisee concept where the teams are owned by celebrities like Bollywood stars (Shah rukh Khan, Shilpa Shetty, Preity Zinta), industrialists (Vijay Mallya) and media barons. The first eight teams to be a part of the tournament were from Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Rajasthan, Bangalore, Punjab and Hyderabad.

Two more teams were added for the fourth edition of the tournament, Pune and Kochi, but for a long time leading up to the start of the IPL in 2011, there were doubts over the participation of Kochi. They managed to avoid all their issues in time for the tournament but have been banned by the BCCI from playing the rest of the editions because of the non-payment of dues.

Chennai have been the most successful team in the IPL having won it twice, apart from been runner-up in the inaugural edition and a losing semi-finalist in the 2009 edition.

The IPL has been behest by many a controversy, most notably relating to alleged charges of financial corruption. The commissioner for the first three editions of the tournament, Lalit Modi, was sacked by the BCCI for his alleged involvement in such issues and has currently a pending disciplinary hearing against him by the BCCI.

Chirayu Amin was the interim chairman of the IPL before Rajeev Shukla, a parliamentarian, took over the role of the chairman in 2011.
