The one-day cricket was introduced nearly a century after the first Test match was played, and it was because a five-day game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was to be washed out due to rain. For an experiment which had been introduced at the domestic level in 1964, the first ODI was played only in 1971 between the same teams, Australia and England, which had played the first Test match.

Since then, ODI has grown to become an equally important format of the game like Test match cricket and bilateral tours have both Tests and ODIs played between teams.

ODI cricket was 60-over cricket to begin with in England, before it changed to 55-overs a side in that part of the world. The sub-continent, because of the early sunsets could only afford to have 50-overs-a-side and in the end, the ICC ruled that all ODIs played around the world will be 50-overs cricket.

Many destructive batsmen have graced the format, something that has always been a requirement to succeed in this form of cricket. Vivian Richards was one of the first to dictate terms to the bowlers and held the record for the highest ODI score for a long time.

Over time, the likes of Dean Jones, Sachin Tendulkar, Adam Gilchrist, Michael Bevan, Ajay Jadeja, Michael Hussey and MS Dhoni have made the format their own with their aggressive stroke-play in the first few field-restriction overs and then in the slog overs as excellent finishers of the game.

ODI cricket has a World Cup that was first played in 1975 before it became a quadrennial event. Once known to be a bastion of UK, it was moved to the sub-continent for the first time in 1987 and since then, cricket in general and the format in particular has acquired a cult-like status in India and Pakistan.

Over time, ODI cricket has changed in its form and rules in order for it to survive the public’s scrutiny and demand for a quicker scoring and less monotonous middle-overs. With competition from its newest sibling, the T20I, there is a worry that ODI cricket may not survive the test of time but after a successful organisation of the 2011 World Cup, hope seems to have floated back for ODIs.
