Test match cricket or five-day cricket is the earliest format of the sport and was the only one for almost a century till the ODIs came around. The first ever Test match was played way back in 1877 and till date (in 2011), more than 3000 Test matches have been played by the ten Test playing nations.

While there are 16 teams which can play ODIs, only ten teams can play Test matches. The tenth and the last side to join the group of nations who could play Test cricket was Bangladesh in 2000, but since then, there hasn’t been any rise in the number. Australia and England were the first two to feature in a Test and since then, South Africa, West Indies, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe have joined the party.

A Test match today is played over five days unless we have a result in favour of one or the other team before that. The teams are expected to bowl 90 overs on each of the five days and in the ensuing time, the two teams need to bat twice each to come to a result. A drawn game, where there is a result in favour of none of the sides, is a common result in this format of the game – the only format in cricket to allow a draw.

The best cricketer arguably to have graced Test match cricket is Don Bradman, who ended his career in 1948 with an average of 99.94, a monumental figure given that the next best is around 60.

Since and before the times of Bradman, there have been the likes of WG Grace, Walter Hammond, Len Hutton, Jack Hobbs, Everton Weekes, Frank Worrell, Geoff Boycott, the Chappell brothers, Gary Sobers, Sunil Gavaskar, Viv Richards, Michael Holding, Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting, Shane Warne, Muthiah Muralitharan, Glen McGrath among the others, who have impressed with their showing in this format.

Tendulkar holds the record for the most number of runs in Test match cricket, around 15,000, followed by Dravid and Ponting with more than 12000 runs. Lara retired 47 runs short of 12k, while Jacques Kallis should soon get there. There are three others with more than 10k runs, with Mahela Jayawardene, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Kumar Sangakkara, all expected to get there.

In Test match bowling, Muralitharan has 800 wickets to his name, followed by Shane Warne at 708 and Anil Kumble 619. All three have now retired but it is safe to assume that their record will not be broken for a long, long time, as the next best current cricketer has only 406 wickets to his name – Harbhajan Singh. McGrath ended his Test career with 563, Walsh with 519, Kapil Dev with 434 and Hadlee had 431. Shaun Pollock, Wasim Akram and Curtly Ambrose were the others with more than 400 wickets to their name.
