At the end of the 1980s, beach volleyball made the transistion from being a summer sport for hobby athletes to the professional stage. In 1987, the first tournament took place under the supervision of the FIVB and the World Tour took place for the first time in 1989/1990. Since then, the sport has developed quickly and continues to attract more and more spectators who want to experience the excitement of this superb sport up close and personal. Today, the World Tour stops at around 30 destinations around the world  (for men and women) - ranging from Stavanger to Moscow to Shanghai - and boast a total prize pool worth a staggering USD 7,000,000.
