The history of the AFC Champions League, the prestigious club competition under the presidency of the Asian Football Confederation, began back in 1967. Six teams went into battle for the coveted title in the then-called "Asian Champion Club Tournament".
Today there are 32 Asian teams that take part in the AFC Champions League. They are selected based on strict criteria which ban teams from countries such as Thailand, Malaysia and India from taking part due to lacking sporting levels. Since 2000, teams from Eastern Asia have dominated the scene, with South Korea taking the crown five times and Japan twice. The overall record-breakers are also from South Korea - the Pohang Steelers have taken the coveted trophy home three times since 1997.
